AHA Equity Awards - two awards, one for individuals and another for academic units, given annually to recognize and publicize individuals and institutions that have achieved excellence in recruiting and retaining underrepresented racial and ethnic groups into the historic profession.

Equity for Minority Historians in the Academic History Workplace: A Guide To Best Practices, Perspectives (October 2007) written by the Committee on Minority Historians (CMH) of the AHA, and approved by Council, this is intended to guide the decisions and inform the practices of deans, department chairs, and senior administrators in universities and colleges with hopes that it will serve as a resource for all historians, regardless of their rank.

Web Resources on Equity

Confronting A Crisis in the Historical Profession, Perspectives (October 2007) looks at how the disparity between the racial/ethnic backgrounds of scholars and teachers of history in the United States and the general public, especially the school-age population, has widened to the point where it must be considered a major crisis for the historical profession.

AHA Statement on Affirmative Action, In January 1997, the AHA Council approved the Statement on Affirmative Action.

The Status of Women and Minorities in the History Profession, By Robert B. Townsend Perspectives 2008

 

Reports

The Status of Women and Minorities in the History Profession, Perspectives (April 2002) looks at recent trends in PhD production and employment, specifically for women and minorities.

Report on the Status and Hiring of Women and Minority Historians in Academia, Fourth Edition Developed by the AHA's Committee on Women Historians and approved by the Council, the guidelines in this report provide statistics on appointments, tenure, and promotion. This edition also discusses salary issues and the status of minority women and men.
